SWARTHMORE, Pa.– For 85 minutes, Eastern University Women's Soccer stayed in the match. The host Swarthmore College Garnet scored a pair of late goals to pull away to a 3-0 win in the final game of the season-opening tournament hosted by Widener and Swarthmore.
Adrianna Rowlands made 19 saves to keep her team in the match until the end.
The Garnet returned the top two scorers and loads of talent from a team that has made deep runs in the NCAA Tournament for the past two years, and the hosts put Eastern under pressure from the start. Rowlands was ready. The junior goalkeeper stopped the first 12 shots that Swarthomore put on goal. On the 12th shot, which came in the 41st minute, Rowlands could only parry a breakaway save against Marin McCoy. The rebound looked to be heading around the post, but Swarthmore's Hannah Lichtenstein pushed it across the line for a one-goal edge.
"I thought we fought really hard tonight as a group," said Head Coach
Brandon West. "Adrianna was lights out. I saw glimpses of brilliance from our midfield and it was good for us to be stretched now. Playing agaisnt this level team will make us better in the end as a group."
While the Eastern chances were scarce, they remained within a goal until the Garnet put away another rebound on a breakaway in the 85th minute. Swarthmores final goal came in the last 20 seconds of the match.
Eastern will play at Cabrini on Wednesday.
