ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Soccer scored twice in the final 11 minutes to rally to a 2-1 home win over the Alvernia University Golden Wolves (3-5-1). With the win, the Eagles (3-3-3) remain unbeaten at home and unbeaten over their last five matches.
Alondra Cervantes scored in the 80th minute and
Caroline Lozzi ripped a shot from the top of the box for her first goal of the year to put the Eagles up.
Adrianna Rowlands made eight saves in the win.
Things did not start well today. The Golden Wolves earned a fourth-minute corner kick and Claire Brier found space in front of the goal for a free header. The sophomore nodded home the goal for an early one-goal edge. Four minutes later, Brier nearly doubled the lead on a corner from the other side. Taylor Gough, who had hit the corner on the goal, swung a spinning ball off the crossbar on the initial corner. Brier hit the rebound toward goal, but Rowlands was in position, and the junior goalkeeper kept the ball out of the net and her defense converged on the ball to clear it from danger.
The visitors had two more good chances to take the lead before the Eagles had the next great chance of the match. After a defender blocked an
Ashley Zemeski shot over the end line for a corner kick.
Amy Radcliffe got on the end of a
Courtney Davis kick, but an Alvernia defender blocked the shot before it could get to goal.
Alvernia had a 7-3 edge in first-half shots.
Eastern appeared to tie the match on a corner kick in the 53rd minute.
Nicole Weenink had the initial shot blocked, but the sophomore forward chased down the rebound and hit a strong volley toward goal. The assistant referee had his flag in the air before the Eagles could celebrate, but the play did seem to switch the momentum toward the home side.
The Eagles had more of the ball and a decent amount of field postion, but Rowlands still had more to do as the visitors proved to be dangerous in transition.
Cervantes forced a save on a shot off a cross from
Hannah Rogers in the 71st minute, but the Eagles still trailed when
Melanie Witter was fouled forty yards from goal. Davis curled her kick around the two-person wall and into the runs of the Eastern attackers. The ball narrowly eluded
Ashley Zemeski, but Cervantes was in perfect postilion to tuck home her third goal of the season.
Cervantes had a hopeful effort saved moments later Alvernia had a golden opportunity only seconds after that. Rowalands went to the upper corner to save Taylor Gough's 25-yard free kick.
Lozzi scored the game-winner after Radcliffe played a probing ball into the box.
Nicole Weenink beat her mark to the ball and bumped it toward Witter who was facing away from goal. Witter rolled a pass back toward the senior midifelder who pushed the ball onto her right foot and released a low drive that slipped inside the right upright.
The Eastern defense made the lead stand up. The Eagles have allowed one or fewer goals in six of the last seven matches.
"This was our best performance of the season," Head Coach
Brandon West said after the match. "It would be hard for me to pick out stand-out players because I thought as a collective group we were great on both sides of the ball. We stayed composed and played our brand of soccer for 90 minutes even after giving up the first goal. We still have a ways to go still but this is a great result."
The Eagles start into MAC Freedom competition at Manhattanville College this Saturday.
