Bullpen Leads as Baseball Tops Cabrini

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Baseball picked up an 8-3 non-league win over the visiting Cabrini University Cavaliers. The Eagles pounded out 16 hits  and five relievers did not allow a run in five innings of work in the win over their Eagle Road rivals.

The Cavaliers took the first game of the year between the neighboring schools back in early March. With a critical weekend series against Delaware Valley starting on Friday, Eastern Head Coach Jed Morris planned from the start to use a good portion of his pitching staff in small doses to try to win the game.

Kyle Daddario took the start. The converted first baseman has shown throughout the year that he is able to throw strikes with multiple pitches. Daddario threw a career-high four innings and struck out four. The Cavaliers picked up a run in the second with just one hit. After the Eagles put up two runs in the bottom of the third, Cabrini plated two more in the top of the fourth.

Daddario allowed six singles in his four innings.

The Eagles could not score in the bottom of the fourth, and Josh Freed pitched a scoreless fifth inning.

The Eastern offense came to life in the bottom of the fifth. Angelo Kelly stat the rally with a single to left. Shane Albertson singled and advanced on a throw to put runners on second and third for Timmy Gorton. The junior catcher, who had doubled to drive in Kelly in the third inning. Singled to left to tie the game.

Gorton then stole second to move into scoring position. Andrew Boykin drove a ball into left-center to plate both Albertson and Gorton. The Eagles tacked on one more run in the inning on an errant throw.

"It was good to see a few hitters hit the ball to the opposite field today with success," Morris said when asked how today would help his team for the weekend. Boykin, Kelly, and Gorton each had two hits to left field. Gorton had three hits on the afternoon to bring his season total to 49. He has 41 RBI's and is closing in on Eastern's single-season RBI record.

Jacob Breyer jumped ahead of the first hitter he faced in the sixth, but the Cabrini batter took several pitches just off the plate and drew a walk. He went no further as Breyer retired the next three hitters on routine fly balls. It was Breyer's first appearance of the year on the mound. Joe Clancy then pitched a perfect seventh after the Eagles had tacked on a single run in the sixth.

Justin Fredericks struck out the first batter he faced in the eighth before the Cavaliers loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a ground ball single. Matt Bunjo came on to induce an inning-ending double play. Albertson, playing at second today, took a perfect feed from shortstop Zach Belansek and fired to Boykin to beat the batter by a step.

Bunjo was the beneficiary of a nice grab on a line drive by Britton Lawrence in the ninth, but the sophomore sidewinder faced only four batters to earn the five-out save.

"I was really happy with our pitching today," Morris said. "They were able to throw enough off-speed pitches for strikes and keep them off balance." The Eastern pitchers allowed eight hits and walked only three.

Boykin had his fourth four-RBI afternoon of the year. He has 29 RBI's in 24 games this spring. Albertson and Joseph De Los Santos both reached base three times.

The Eagles host Delaware Valley at 3:30 on Friday.
