Strazza Pitches Baseball to Win over Delaware Valley

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Starting pitcher Tommy Strazza scattered six hits over seven innings to lead Eastern University Baseball to a 7-1 series-opening win over the visiting Delaware Valley University Aggies. The Eagles (12-16, 7-9 MAC Freedom) scored seven runs without the benefit of an extra base hit.

Strazza struck out the first two men he faced and worked through a scoreless first ahead of a three-run inning for the Eagles. Andrew Boykin drove in the first run with a bases-loaded walk. Eastern's second run scored on a double play. The Eagles had two players retired on one play three times in the first four innings. Brady DiGiacomo hit the first pitch he saw through the left side to drive in Timmy Gorton and give Strazza a 3-0 lead.

The Aggies picked up their run after a leadoff double in the third. The runner advanced to third on a ground ball and scored on a fly ball to right center field. Gorton had a one-out single in the third, but he was caught stealing on a strike out to end the inning.

Strazza kept the Aggies off balance and had three ground ball outs in the bottom of the fourth. Fourteen Del Val hitters rolled into outs in Strazza's seven innings of work.

The Eagles added an insurance run in the sixth. Gorton singled through the right side for his third hit of the day and stole second. He scored on a single through a drawn-in infield by Freddy Yahn.

Strazza worked himself into a jam in the seventh with a pair of two-out walks to load the bases in front of Kyle Wenger. Strazza got a ground ball to the right side and was able to beat the speedy center fielder to the bag to retire the side.

"That was great mental toughness by Tommy," Head Coach Jed Morris said. "You don't want to walk guys in front of him [Wenger]. He is the real deal. Tommy got him to roll over on it and got out of it."

The Eagles scored twice more on a two-out single from Gorton. With four hits and two RBI's today, Gorton has now reached the 50-hit mark for the second-straight year and ties Eastern's single-season RBI mark set in 2010 by Scott Renauro. The junior catcher has 153 hits in his career.  Craig Stanley came through with a two-out RBI single in the eighth inning for the final margin.

Matt Bunjo retired all six hitters he faced to close out the game. Since returning from a non-baseball injury, Bunjo has appeared in seven of Eastern's nine games and the last six. He has allowed three hits and walked one in 10.1 innings of work.

The Eagles will play a doubleheader at Delaware Valley tomorrow.
