Softball Stopped at Wesley

DOVER, Del.– Eastern University Softball dropped a pair of non-conference games at Wesely College this afternoon. The Eagles dropped a tight 2-1 decision in the opener before falling 14-2 in a run-shortened nightcap.

Eastern's only run in the opener came in the first inning. The Eagles loaded the bases with only one out on a pair of infield hits and a fielder's choice. Kelsey Clever lined a ball to deep right field to drive in the run and advance both baserunners, but Taylor Crown grounded out to short and the rally ended.

The Eagles again loaded the bases in the second inning, but the Wolverines were able to escape the jam with a force out at the plate, a strike out and a ground ball out. The Wolverines rode that momentum into the bottom of the second. The first two Wesley hitters singled before Melissa Irick retired the next hitter on a line out to short. The Wolverines plated their only two runs of the opener on back-to-back doubles.

The Eagles had eleven hits in the game, but Meagan Quinn's leadoff double in the second was the only extra-base hit of the game. It is the first time this year that the Eagles have lost a game where they have had ten or more hits. Irick scattered eight hits over her six innings of work to take the hard-luck loss.

The Wolverines (21-17)  broke open a 1-0 game with a seven-run third inning and then tacked on six more runs in the fourth. Irick had an RBI single in a two-run fifth.

The Eagles (5-23) will host Moravian College on Thursday before traveling to Misericordia for a MAC Freedom doubleheader on Saturday.
