ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Softball dropped a pair of non-conference home games to the No. 7 Moravian College Greyhounds (30-2). The Eagles fell, 6-1, in the opener, before dropping the nightcap, 8-0, in six innings.
The Eagles (5-24) joined a host of teams that have struggled to get their offense going against the Moravian pitching. The Greyhound pitchers came into the game with a team era of .85.
Moravian put up three runs in the first inning, and another on a home run in the second.
Melissa Irick then settled into a good rhythm on the mound and got some good help from the seven players behind her.
"We played good defense throughout the day," Head Coach
Claire Emplit said after the game. "Our outfield made some really solid catches, and we are becoming more consistent. We are so young. It has taken a little while to get here, but we see a lot of things we are doing right."
The Greyhounds stretched their lead to 6-0 with runs in the sixth and seventh innings before the Eagles put together a two-out rally for a run in the seventh.
Grace Gonzalez looped a ball into short center field, and she made it to third on
Taylor Crown's single to right center. Gonzalez scored on a wild pitch.
The Eagles fell behind early in game two as well.
Haleigh Williams cam eon in relief in the fourth to get the Eagles out of a jam, but the Greyhounds scored a pair of runs int he fifth and one more in the sixth to go up eight.
Samantha Albertson reached on a two-out single in the sixth, but the Eagles were unable to mount a rally to extend the game.
Eastern will play at Misericordia on Saturday.
