MADISON, N.J.–
Sean Fechter scored his third goal of the game 29 second into the third overtime to lift Eastern University Men's Lacrosse to a 15-14 MAC Freedom win.
Because the host Devils picked up an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty with twenty seconds left in the second overtime, the Eagles started the third extra frame with the ball.
Bryan Goetz missed a shot wide, and then Marc Buannic had a shot saved, but the Eagles kept possession. Nine seconds later, Fechter ended the game after Goetz found him open in a man-up set.
The 15 goals matches a season-high for the Eagles, but the game was not what the Eastern coaches hoped for.
"Our offense played well for much of the game," Head Coach
Kevin Wallace said, "but we did not play really well down the stretch and we did not get stops when we needed them in the second half.
The Eastern offense rolled to an 11-7 halftime lead, and when
Matt Martin buried his third of the day early in the third period the Eagles had what appeared to be a comfortable 12-7 edge.
That lead did not last long. The Devils scored on the ensuing faceoff and added another goal two and a half minutes later. Goetz scored his secodn of the day to stem the tide for a brief moment, but FDU put away three goals in the final two and a half minutes of the third period to pull within a goal at 13-12 heading into the final period.
Tim Lamb found Martin for an easy finish five minutes into the fourth, and the two-goal edge looked as though it would hold, but the Devils scored with three minutes left and again with 30 seconds left to force the extra frame.
Eastern won the faceoff in the first overtime frame and had a a 3-1 edge in shots. The Eagles had to defend an extra-man opportunity in the second overtime and were able to do it without giving up a shot on goal. An FDU player picked up a penalty for throwing his stick at a high passto try to break up the Eastern clear in the final minute of the second overtime.
Brett McDonald was credited with 18 saves as he picked up his second win in as many starts in goal. Buannic had three goals, and
Jake Pousson,
Jake Billera, and
Tim Lamb each had a goal. Lamb picked up three assists.
Eastern (7-6, 2-1 MAC Freedom) will host Manhattanville College on Wednesday at four.
