Women's Tennis Nipped at Messiah

Box Score GRANTHAM, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Tennis fell one match short of picking up a big non-league road win at Messiah. The Eagles split the singles matches, but the host Falcon's held their one-match advantage from doubles and claimed the 5-4 win.

The lone Eastern doubles point came at second doubles. Shannon Jugler and Lauren Good trailed 5-2 but rallied to win 8-6.

"I talked to them at the changeovers," Head Coach Mark Spangler said, "and I said we are going to need to win some points. We were not going to win that match by just putting balls in play. Shannon was really good at the net and Lauren did a really nice job controlling points through the second part of that match."

The Eagles dropped a 9-7 heartbreaker after leading 7-5 in third doubles.

Emma Paugh won a tough 6-3, 6-2 victory at first singles in a match that was, according to Spangler, much closer than the final score.

"There was one game that took nearly 25 minutes," Spangler said, "Emma just kept her composure and won more of the the big points."

Good won her match in a very efficient 6-1, 6-1 match. Spangler felt that Good, a double-winner, had a very good day.

Emily Thomas won a lengthy three-set match at fifth singles, but the Eagles were not able to earn the critical fifth point of the match. The Eagles return to MAC Freedom cmpetition when they host Delaware Valley on Wednesday.
