VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Eastern University Softball dropped its final two spring break games in Virginia Beach. The Eagles fell, 7-2, to SUNY Fredonia in the morning and lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to St. Joseph's- Brooklyn in the afternoon. The Eagles led 2-1 going into the bottom of the fifth, but the Bears scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to claim the game.
Haleigh Williams started in the circle for the second game. The senior saw the first pitch she threw go over the right field fence, but bounced back and did not allow another run in her three innings of work. Williams allowed just the one run and four hits before giving way to
Melissa Irick.
The Eagles had just two hits through the first four innings but were able to grab the lead with a two-run rally in the fifth.
Taylor Crown led off the inning with a single. She moved to third on an
Alyssa Bolger single.
Jess Snader delivered a two-out, two-RBI single to put the Eagles up. Snader has a team-best five RBI's through six games. The freshman infielder is hitting .375.
The Bears tied the game in the fifth and pulled ahead in the sixth. Eastern put runners on in the sixth and seventh, but the St. Joseph's pitching held and the Bears claimed a 3-2 win.
The Eagles fell behind 7-0 in the first game. Fredonia broke open the game with a three-run fourth inning. The Devils had six consecutive hits to start the inning. The Eagles escaped further damage on a hard-hit line drive back to pitcher
Meagan Quinn and a throw to first to double off a runner.
Snader started an Eastern rally with a one-out single in the fifth.
Kelsey Clever moved her along, and
Rebecca Howard launched a towering double to right-center to drive in two.
The Eagles are back in Pennsylvania and will return to action at Alvernia on March 14.
