COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.– After nearly three weeks without a game, Eastern University Softball traveled to Ursinus for a doubleheader leading into tomorrow's MAC Freedom opener against Manhattanville. The Eagles looked a little rusty in a 6-1 loss in the opener before battling to a tough 2-1 loss in the nightcap.
The host Bears (7-9) scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning of game two to rally past the Eagles.
Melissa Irick pitched four scoreless innings and scored Eastern's only run in game two.
"We played a much better game two," Head Coach
Claire Emplit said after the game. "I was pleased with our adjustments on defense, and Melissa did well for us on the mound."
Irick allowed only two hits before giving way to
Haleigh Williams in the top of the fifth. The Bears scored two runs on three hits in that inning. The Eagles generated their run after two were out in the second. Irick singled and then scored after
Jess Snader's single went through the right fielder all the way to the fence.
In game one, the Bears scored two runs in the second, third, and fourth innings. The hosts took advantage of three Eastern errors to generate six runs on only six hits. Maddie Iswalt drove in the Eastern run with a single in the fifth.
"We need to work on having good at-bats and hitting with purpose," Emplit said. "We are looking forward to being at home tomorrow."
The Eagles will host the defending MAC Freedom Champions at 1 pm.
