Women's Hoops Falls Just Short at Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Basketball had a shot at the buzzer for the win rim out. The Eagles' bid to claim their first win of the year fell just short as they fell, 57-56, at Elizabethtown College.

Neither team led by more than six points in a game that featured eight ties and seven lead changes. The Eagles scored three more baskets than their hosts in the game, but the Blue Jays (3-2) took advantage of their trips to the line for the difference in the game.

Eastern trailed 57-53 with a minute to play, but Taylor Price stepped away from pressure at the top of the key and hit a deep 3-pointer to close the gap to a single point with 41 seconds on the clock. The senior guard finished with a  game-high 16 points and added nine rebounds.

The Eagles elected to play defense for a stop and the gamble paid off. Regie Robinson pulled down a tough rebound and Price brought the ball up the floor against pressure and the Elizabethtown defense collapsed around her in the paint. She pitched the ball to Amber Anderson on the wing, but her shot at the buzzer rimmed out.

The Eagles battled foul trouble throughout the game. As a result, Robinson was limited to only 16 minutes. With Robinson and Sarah Getzinger in foul trouble, Brianna Young-Harris stepped into a larger role in the offense. The sophomore forward finished with nine points and eight rebounds in 36 minutes off the bench.

After trailing 15-9 at the end of the first quarter, the Eagles started quickly in the second quarter, Taylor Azer hit a jumper and Anderson connected on a 3-pointer to spark  9-0 run at the start of the second. The Eagles eventually built a 21-17 lead on a  Price three-point play with six minutes to play in the half.

That lead, however, would not last, and Elizabethtown led 31-27 at the half. The Eagles were 5-for-5 from the line in the first half, but only mustered 33 percent shooting from the floor.

The Eagles again worked into a lead midway through the third period, but again, the Blue Jays responded and held a 43-42 lead with ten minutes to play.

An 8-0 run in the middle of the fourth period put the Eagles up 50-47 with six minutes to play, but that lead slipped away on a pair of inside baskets against players in deep foul trouble. Elizabethtown made 10-of-12 free throws in the second half.

The Eagles (0-5) will return to action next Wednesday with a  home game against Rosemont College.
