ST.DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Volleyball (17-9, 6-1 MAC Freedom) rolled to a an efficient three set win over the visiting Delaware Valley Aggies on senior night. Prior to the match, Eastern Volleyball recognized the contributions of seniors
Morgan Shemonski and
Miranda Kauffman.
Shemonski has started for four years as a right-side hitter and has been a force on offense and defense. She has over 800 kills and more than 250 blocks in her career.
Kauffman played her first three years as a defensive specialist and, for a few matches, an emergency setter. This year, she has taken over as the leader of the Eastern defense and has worn the libero jersey for much of the season. She has a career-best 339 digs and is 14 digs short of 1000 for her career.
Delaware Valley (3-13, 0-7 MAC Freedom) had never beaten the Eagles, and tonight's match was Eastern's from the start. The Eagles led 11-8 in the opening set when
Cecilia Bauer started to serve. The sophomore defensive specialist put the Aggies under pressure with aggressive serving and
Ally Spillane and
Michelle Paulsen took advantage. Spillane had six kills and Paulsen picked up four in a 12-point run. Spillane finished the contest witha match-high 13 kills. Paulsen had nine kills on 11 attacks.
The Aggies broke Eastern's run, but the Eagles came right back with a kill from Spillane for a sideout and a point on serve via a
Caroline Shelby kill.
Katie Stenby started serving in the second set. The sophomore defensive specialist serve four aces on the way to a 12-0 lead in the second set. The Eagles had 7 aces and hit .529 on the way to a 25-9 win in the second set.
Head Coach
Mark Birtwistle changed up the line-up further for the third set. The Eagles trailed 6-4 before picking up points on Kauffman's serve. Eastern stretched the lead further on three points on
Giana Cirulli serves. She started the run with an ace before Spillane picked up another two kills.
Eastern hit .524 in the final set and .585 overall.
Morgan Kline finished with a pair of kills and 39 assists. Kauffman had a team-high nine digs. Shemonski finished with five kills on five attacks.
The Eagles will have a tough test on Friday when they host No. 6 Carnegie Mellon University in the first game of a weekend tournament. Stevens Institute of Technology will play Ithaca College on Friday night at 5:00 Pm and Eastern will play Carnegie Mellon at 7:00 or shortly thereafter. Fans attending that game are encouraged to wear pink as the Eagles will be raising funds for breast cancer awareness and research.
The tournament will continue with four matches on Saturday.
