ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Volleyball dropped the first match of their home quad-meet to the No. 6 Carnegie Mellon University Tartans (26-2).
The Eagles (18-10) hit just .050 against a very active Tartan block.
Caroline Shelby had a match-high 10 kills, but the Eastern offense was unable to stay in sync for any long stretches.
Eastern trailed 11-10 in the opening set before Carnegie Mellon reeled off an 8-1 run to grab control of the set.
"We struggled in our passing tonight," Head Coach
Mark Birtwistle said after the match. "Some of that was stuff they were doing. They were very efficient and did not make many mistakes, but if we struggle in our passing against good teams like that we are going to have a difficult time generating offense."
The Tartans took the opening set 25-18.
Carnegie Mellon took advantage of another mid-set run in the second. With the set tied 9-9, the Tartans scored seven in a row and 16 of the final 20 points of the frame. The Eagles scored only three points on serve in the set.
The visitors jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the third set and held on to sweep the match with another 25-13 win. The Eagles did not record an ace in the match and were blocked 11 times. Shelby had a team-high eight digs.
The Eagles will play Ithaca College at 10 am tomorrow and will play Stevens Institute of Technology at 4 pm. Carnegie Mellon will play Ithaca at noon and Stevens at 2 pm.
