ST.DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Soccer entered this afternoon's non-league match against the visiting Franklin and Marshall Diplomats with a 366-minute shutout streak. The Diplomats scored the only goal of the match in the 79th minute to claim a 1-0 win and to snap the Eagles shutout streak.
With
Adrianna Rowlands standing strong in goal and the Eastern defense frustrating the Diplomat attack, Eastern (7-6-4) had three good chances to take the lead in the match. The first came on a corner kick in the 18th minute.
Courtney Davis curled a ball to the back post that
Nicole Weenink headed toward the inside of the back post. F & M's Kyra Judge held her ground on the post and headed the shot from danger.
In the 68th minute,
Emma Daly played a brilliant switching ball behind the Diplomat back row.
Hannah Rogers beat her mark to the pass but knocked her shot just wide of the near post. Seven minutes later,
Marisa Iannelli spun a serve from the right side into the box that beat the Diplomat goalkeeper.
Gabriella Kaiafas got her head to the serve, but the ball rolled wide of the post and the score stayed tied.
The Diplomats also had chances.
Katy Laurie cleared a ball off the line on a corner kick in the eighth minute and Rowlands had five first-half saves. Two of those first half stops by Eastern's junior keeper were of the spectacular variety, but she made her best play to stop a breakaway right at the hour mark.
Franklin and Marshall (6-8-1) found the game-winner on a breakaway from Reanna Leoni in the 79th minute. Two defenders tracked her down, but she made a good cutback move to free herself and rolled a ball inside the right upright for her tenth goal of the year.
The Eagles had a final chance on a restart from 25 yards out in the 88th minute, but Davis hit a shot that curled just over the bar.
"I thought we struggled to gain rhythm in the game," Head Coach
Brandon West said. "We lost the territory battle for stretches. Adrianna made some great plays for us. We worked hard, but we struggled to keep the ball. We have three days to get better."
The Eagles will host DeSales at noon on Saturday. The Eagles can secure a home game in the MAC Freedom Tournament with a win in that match.
