ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Soccer had a chance to earn a home game in the upcoming MAC Freedom Tournament, but a 3-1 loss to the visiting DeSales University Bulldogs dropped the Eagles (7-7-4, 4-2-1 MAC Freedom) to the fourth seed. Eastern will travel to Wilkes University on Tuesday evening for the program's first post-season match in five years.
The Bulldogs (11-6, 5-2 MAC Freedom) entered the match needing a win or a tie to secure a spot in the tournament. They took a huge step toward that with a pair of goals from Angelica Bertola in a five minute stretch just after the midpoint of the first half. Bertola, who now has 25 goals on the year, scored both goals from inside the box after short clears.
The first goal came after a free kick from near midfield. A short clear left the box, but Rachel Medlar intercepted the clear and ripped it across the face of goal where Bertola touched home her 24th of the year. The second goal came after another serve from distance. Bertola picked off the short clear and hit a shot into the top of the net for a 2-0 lead.
As the Eagles needed a win to secure a second seed, that lead would prove to be enough. The Bulldogs had a 10-3 advantage in shots in both halves.
Adrianna Rowlands made a pair of tough saves on Bertola in the first half and four more stops in the second half.
The visitors stretched the lead to 3-0 on a long shot from Medlar in the 75th minute.
The Eagles finally found the goal on a corner kick in the 80th minute.
Courtney Davis swung in a good ball to the back post where
Amy Radcliffe powered home a header for her third goal of the year.
The Eagles honored seven seniors before the match.
