WILKES-BARRE, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Soccer battled with the host Wilkes University Colonels for 110 scoreless minutes to earn a fourth tie this fall.
Adrianna Rowlands finished with four saves to collect her third consecutive shutout.
In the six matches between the two schools since 2012, there had only been six total goals, so there was little chance that this evening's contest was going to be a high-scoring affair. With the men's match going to the 110th minute and a full senior day production, the match got underway late.
Regardless, the Eagles came out ready to work. Throughout the first half, the Eastern defense foiled numerous Wilkes' forays into the attack end. Eastern's best chances came in springing
Nicole Weenink on the flanks and on several restart chances.
Micaela Olivero spun a shot off the post from 15 yards out in the 14th minute, and the Eastern defense cleared it from danger. Moments later, Rowlands made a good reaction save on a header from in close to keep the score sheet clean.
Wilkes had an 8-2 edge in first-half shots, but the Eagles, in their second game in Wilkes-Barre this week, stayed patient and continued to work defensively. The Colonels had several chances in the second half. The best of those came on a free kick from 24 yards out in the 79th minute. Elise Brubaker hit a dipping shot over the wall that rang off the crossbar.
With 45-more scoreless minutes, the team found itself in comfortable territory. Eastern (7-5-4, 4-1-1 MAC Freedom) remained unbeaten (1-0-4) in extra time this year.
The Eagles continued that unbeaten streak with a little bit of good fortune in the 96th minute. Brubaker again was the issue. The first-year midfielder found a little bit of space between the lines and ripped a shot that hit the right upright and ricocheted to the left upright and out. Rowlands quickly covered the chance.
"We defended well and worked really hard," Head Coach
Brandon West said after the match. "We got lucky a couple of times, but sometimes you need those. We had stretches where we struggled to keep the ball, but at other times we showed that we could keep the ball. We risked our hearts and left everything we had on the field. I am proud of our effort tonight."
The draw moves the Eagles into a tie for second in the MAC Freedom with one league match left. Because Wilkes beat Misericordia, Eastern can only finish ahead of Wilkes if the Colonels drop a point at Manhattanville next Saturday. If Wilke wins and Eastern beats or ties DeSales next Saturday, the Eagles will claim the third seed and be back at Wilkes for the MAC Freedom Tournament.
Eastern hosts Franklin and Marshall College in a non-league match on Tuesday.
