WILKES-BARRE, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Soccer scored a goal on either side of the halftime break to claim a 2-0 win at King's College. The win secures a spot in the post-season for the Eagles, who improved to 4-1 in MAC Freedom games this fall.
"I thought we played our best game on both sides of the ball, " Head Coach
Brandon West said after the win. "Our second group played very well, and we were able to sustain pressure and possession throughout."
The Monarchs had won the previous two meetings between the two sides in Wilkes-Barre and had won three-of the last four meetings overall. With three games in conference play left coming into tonight, the match shaped up as a 'win and you are in' scenario for the Eagles. A loss or a tie would not have eliminated Eastern, but it would have made the road much more daunting.
Through the start of the match, the game remained in the midfield. Both teams had some chances.
Melanie Witter was the only player to put a shot on frame in the first 35 minutes, and
Adrianna Rowlands had to make only one stop over that time.
Hannah Rogers picked up the ball on the right flank in the 37th minute. The first year winger hit a ball across the face of the goal that the Monarchs cleared from danger over the endline for a corner kick.
Courtney Davis, who provided the service on Saturday's game-winner against FDU as well, spun a high arcing ball to the back post.
Alondra Cervantes timed her run perfectly and smashed a header into the top of the net for her fifth goal of the season. With the shutout, the tally stood as the third game-winning goal for the senior midfielder.
"Courtney is so consistent with set pieces and her services," Head Coach
Brandon West said. "We feel like we have a chance to score whenever we have a corner or a restart in a deep position."
The Eagles held the lead through halftime and doubled it shortly after the break.
Katy Laurie started the play with some work on the right flank. After a couple balls were cleared from play Laurie threw the ball into a deep corner.
Amy Radcliffe made a quick move and rolled the ball back toward the top of the box where
Caroline Lozzi swept a one-time shot to the back post for her third tally of the year.
The two goal lead proved to be more than enough. Rowlands picked up the shutout with just the one first-half save. The Eastern back row, led by Davis and fellow seniors
Alex Imperatore, and
Ashley Zemeski along with sophomore
Carli Sitkowski surrendered only two shots in the second half.
"It was also great to get a second consecutive shutout," West added. "We limited fouls and corner kicks and we were able to keep the ball We won our individual battles for 90 minutes and Adrianna managed her box well in goal. I am proud of our defensive effort."
The win puts the Eagles in the postseason for the first time in the careers of the senior class. West, though wants to see his team continue to get better. The Eagles have two games remaining in the league, and both are against teams that are likely to play in the post-season.
"We are excited to extend our season. Its extra time that we get to spend together," he added. "This weekend will be against another good team and we are going to come ready to fight, scratch, and claw. We want to get better. Even though we are excited about playoffs, we are more excited to get better and play better."
The Eagles are back in Wilkes-Barre again on Saturday before wrapping up the regular season with two home games.
