ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Soccer picked up a critical MAC Freedom result with a 1-0 Homecoming win over the visiting Devils of FDU-Florham. The Eagles picked up the only goal they would need on an own goal in the 81st minute.
Adrianna Rowlands made four saves to pick up her third shutout of the season.
The Eagles (6-5-3, 3-1 MAC Freedom) came into today's match looking to bounce back from a home loss to Misericordia on Tuesday. That was the first loss at home for Eastern this fall.
From the start, the Eagles had the better of play and
Nicole Weenink and
Melanie Witter put the Devil back row under pressure. The Eagles had a pair of corner kicks in the opening eight minutes and were dangerous on both.
Ashley Zemeski put a header attempt just over the bar on the first one. From there the game stayed mainly in the midfield for the remainder of the half.
Hannah Rogers had the best chance of the half on a tough angle from in close.
Amanda Kelly hit a shot wide of the post and Rogers read the ball and met it six yards out. Her shot hit the underside of the crossbar and stayed out of the goal. Eastern had a 4-3 edge in first-half shots.
As the second half progressed, the Eagles had more of the ball, but the Devil back row held firm. Finally, in the 80th minute,
Alondra Cervantes picked up a pass near the top of the box on the left side and made a dribbling run at goal. She was forced wide, but managed to knock her cross off the leg of a defender for Eastern's only corner kick of the second half.
Courtney Davis hit a bending ball to back post over the head of
Alex Imperatore and toward
Amy Radcliffe. An FDU defender lunged to clear the ball under pressure from Radcliffe, and her clearing attempt found the goal.
Up a goal, the Eagles still needed to to keep the shutout to earn the win. FDU had won the last three meetings between the two programs by 2-1 scores, and the Eagles needed to fend off considerable late pressure from their guests.
The Devils had a corner in the 85th minute that Imperatore headed from danger. Shortly after that, an Eastern foul gave the Devils a free kick from 25 yards out. Rowlands tipped that shot over the bar for her toughest save of the day.
Another corner kick resulted in an open shot from 15 yards out that Rowlands smothered to secure the win.
"I thought we played great today," Head Coach
Brandon West said after the match. "Both our first group and second group did well on both sides of the ball. It was great to keep a shutout and score late again. We have things to work on but this was a very important win."
The Eagles will play at King's with a chance to secure a spot in the MAC Freedom Tournament on Wednesday afternoon.
