GLENSIDE, Pa. - Eastern Men's Soccer claimed a 2-0 victory on Saturday afternoon over host Arcadia.
Jacob Myers and
Sean Dougherty each tallied first-half goals to help secure the win for the Eagles.
The game started out as a physical back and forth battle between the two teams as each tried to establish a presence. Neither team managed much offensively until the 23rd minute of the match when
Cade Harmon tallied the first shot for not only Eastern (2-0) but the match itself.
The Eagles had two more chances just minutes later, but Harmon and then
JD Saracco each saw their shot attempts blocked by the Knights (1-1) defense.
Myers finally managed to break the deadlock in the 37th minute tallying an unassisted goal. After getting the ball to the middle of the box, he placed a shot on net that deflected past the goalkeeper for the 1-0 advantage. Dougherty extended the Eagles the lead just two minutes later when he found the back of the net on a header off a throw-in from
Billy Walenda to make it 2-0.
Eastern almost stretched its lead to three in the opening two minutes of the second half. Billy Wallenda got a header on frame but saw it saved by Arcadia goalkeeper Chris Watson to keep the score at 2-0. The Eagles managed only one more shot the rest of the game.
Overall both teams managed to take eight shots each, but Eastern held the edge in shots on goal with five.
Quentin Keibler made two saves on the day to preserve the shutout and earn the win.
Eastern will host Lycoming on September 10th at 4:30 PM in its home opener.
