Men's Soccer Falls in Double Overtime

SWARTHMORE, Pa - Eastern University men's soccer fell to Centennial Conference opponent Swarthmore in double overtime on Wednesday night. The Garnets netted the game winner in the 107th minute to hand the Eagles their first loss of the season. 

Eastern (3-1-1) had a few opportunities to take the lead in the first half but were unable to take advantage. In the 12th minute, JD Saracco ripped a shot from just outside the 18 but saw his attempt whistle wide of the far post. Jake Sankey had an opportunity moments later in the 13th minute, but his shot was denied by Swarthmore (3-2) goalkeeper Michael Thut. 

After a series of shots by the Garnets which were turned away by both Quentin Keibler and the defense, the Eagles went back on the offensive. Sankey and Cade Harmon tallied shots withing a minute span of each other but were once again turned away by Thut. 

In the second both teams battled for possession looking to break the deadlock, but neither could find the edge. The Eagles tallied nine shots placing two on net but saw both chances denied. Late in the half, Swarthmore looked to take the lead in the 74th and 75th minutes. However, both times Keibler denied the Garnets keeping the score level at 0-0. 

In the first overtime period, Saracco had an opportunity to deliver the win but saw his shot punched over the bar by Thut in the 95th minute. Then in the 98th minute, Sean Dougherty had an opportunity, but his header ricocheted off the crossbar leaving the match tied at 0-0.   

Seven minutes into the second overtime period Swarthmore ended the match netting the game winner. After a foul was called on Eastern, the Garnets were awarded a free kick just outside the box, and a quick kick beat Keibler delivering the victory for the hosts.

Overall the Eagles took 22 shots placing only seven on net while Swarthmore took 13 with five on target. Keibler finished with four saves while his counterpart, Thut, finished the match with seven. 

Eastern will host Centenary College on September 17th at 1 p.m.
