READING, Pa. - Eastern University field hockey fell to host Alvernia University 1-0 in overtime on Tuesday night.
Nicole Berger was outstanding for the Eagles tallying 21 saves in the game including 15 in the second half.
The Crusaders (5-0) netted the game winner in the 75th minute. Overall, Alvernia totaled 31 shots including 21 in the second half alone. Meanwhile Eastern (1-4) totaled three shots throughout the game placing one on net.
Alvernia tested Berger early and often taking five shots in the first half but saw all of its attempts turned away. Berger tallied back-to-back saves in less than a minute span to keep the score level at 0-0.
Hayley Williams had an opportunity in the 13th minute to give the Eagles the lead but was unable to capitalize. Off a penalty corner,
Ali Balmer played the ball into the arc, but Williams saw her shot saved by Alvernia goalie Rebecca Brosious.
In the second half, the Crusaders continued to keep the pressure on Eastern and Berger but were unable to find the net. Berger stood tall recording 15 saves including five over the final 6 and a half minutes of the second half.
With the game tied after regulation, the teams headed to overtime to decide the winner. The Crusaders got off to a quick start tallying a shot five seconds into the period but were denied again by Berger. Alvernia had two more opportunities in the 71st minute six seconds apart but was turned away again.
However, in the 75th minute, the Crusaders netted the game winner to secure the win.
Eastern travels to Rowan on September 17th for a 1 PM game.
