ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - Eastern University women's volleyball swept its Saturday matches defeating Johns Hopkins in five sets in the morning and Neumann in the afternoon.
Johns Hopkins (5-3) jumped out to an early lead taking the opening set by the final score of 25-16. The Blue Jays totaled a team hitting percentage of .481, totaling 14 kills while holding the Eagles (5 -0) to a hitting percentage of .296.
Eastern rallied back to take the next two sets by scores of 25-14 and 25-9. In the second set, Johns Hopkins had cut the deficit to just two, 6-4 but the Eagles used a 13-3 run to blow the match wide open.
Stephanie Elechko and
Morgan Shemonski both tallied multiple kills during the run. Then in the third set, the Eagles used an 8-0 run to claim the victory.
Cecilia Bauer totaled three service aces during the scoring run to help give Eastern the 2-1 advantage.
After Hopkins had battled back to tie the match, the teams headed to a decisive fifth set. The Eagles wasted no time and jumped out to a 9-1 lead behind three kills by Elechko. After Hopkins pulled within four Eastern tallied four of the last five points to secure the match.
Overall Elechko led the team posting 18 of Eastern's 52 total kills.
Rylie Haas and Bauer each finished tied for service aces with three apiece.
In the second match, Eastern rolled to a 3-1 victory over Neumann winning by scores of 25-14, 25-15, and 25-11.
In the first set, Eastern jumped out to an 11-5 lead but saw Neumann (1-5) battle back to pull within two, 12-10. A kill by
Michelle Paulsen sparked a 5-1 run to end the set and secure the victory. During the run, Paulsen and Shemonski combined to record four of Eastern's five kills.
After the Knights came back to tie the match in the second set, the Eagles claimed the final two sets to earn the victory. In the third set, the teams were deadlocked at 5-5 until a service error by Neumann sparked an 8-1 run by Eastern stretching its lead to 13-6.
Miranda Kauffman tallied three service aces during the scoring run to help the Eagles extend their lead.
In the fourth and final set, Eastern raced out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back cruising to a 25-11 victory. The Eagles used four scoring runs of three points or more to secure the win.
Alicia Weigel tallied six kills in the set to lead the team.
Overall Eastern totaled 63 kills with Elechko leading the team totaling 15. Paulsen led the team with five blocks while
Rylie Haas totaled 26 digs.
Eastern hosts Wilkes in its MAC Freedom opener on September 14th at 7 p.m.
