Volleyball Defeats Wilkes in MAC Freedom Opener

ST. DAVIDS, Pa - Eastern University women's volleyball defeated Wilkes University in its MAC Freedom opener on Wednesday night by the final score of 3-0. The Eagles totaled a hitting percentage of .436 while holding the Colonels to a percentage of just .040. 

Eastern (7-0, 1-0 MAC Freedom) captured the opening set by the score of 25-8. The Eagles raced out to a 10-1 lead behind a 9-0 run. Four different players tallied kills throughout the set while Stephanie Elechko and Rylie Haas both recorded service aces. The Eagles used four separate scoring runs of three or more to cruise to the win. As a team, Eastern hit .684 while holding Wilkes (4-5, 0-1 MAC Freedom) to a percentage of .087.  

The second set was much closer as the Eagles edged the Colonels 25-17. Wilkes opened a slim 4-3 lead and trailed by one, 7-6, in the early stages of the second set. Holding a small three point lead, 13-10, midway through the set Morgan Shemonski tallied a kill that sparked a 7-2 run by Eastern. After the Colonels battled back to pull within five Shemonski tallied back-to-back kills to end the set and give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage. Eastern totaled 20 kills in the set while posting a hitting percentage of .371. 

In the third and final set, Wilkes trailed 7-6 again but once again the Eagles had an answer. A service error by the Colonels sparked a 9-0 run by Eastern to jump out to a 16-6 lead. The Eagles used a 4-0 to close out set and the match bookended by kills from Cecilia Bauer. Seven Eastern players tallied kills in the set and as a team hit .333 while holding Wilkes to a percentage of -.130. 

Elechko led the Eagles totaling 12 kills while Morgan Kline tallied a team-high 28 assists. 

Eastern travels to Franklin & Marshall to participate in the Franklin & Marshall Scramble. The Eagles will take on Ohio Northern and F&M on Friday at 2 and 6 p.m. respectively.
