Women's Tennis Shuts Out Rival Cabrini

Box Score ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - Eastern Women's Tennis blanked rival Cabrini College on Thursday afternoon 9-0 to earn its seventh straight victory. Kelly Archibald and Laura Thomas won their sixth straight doubles match to stretch the Eagles lead to 2-0 in the match.

Trailing 3-6 Archibald and Thomas faced an uphill battle but began to chip away at the Cavaliers lead. The duo went on to win six of the next seven games to win the match 9-7. Archibald ripped a shot down the line to tally the match point and earn the victory.

"The girls served well and did a nice job of controlling the net," said Head Coach Mark Spangler. "They battled back from a tough spot to earn the win, and I think that victory had a big impact on the match."

For the season, Archibald and Thomas are 6-2 when paired together in doubles. The duo has won all of their matches in the first doubles spot and has won six straight matches.

Emma Paugh and Archibald each won their singles matches in straight sets winning by scores of 6-1, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-3 respectively. Amanda Riiff also won her match in straight sets shutting out her opponent 6-0, 6-0.

"I thought Amanda had a great match," continued Spangler. "She served well and dictated the tempo of the match very nicely today. Amanda hit her spots and took advantage of her opportunities."

It is Riiff's fourth straight victory in singles moving her record to 6-1 this season. Paugh also won her fourth straight singles match while Archibald claimed her sixth consecutive victory to move to 7-1 on the season.

"Today was a great win, but we have a big test on Saturday," concluded Spangler. "Wilkes is a great team and has been the champs for the last few years, so we need to be focused and ready to go."

Eastern turns their attention back to MAC Freedom play this weekend when they host Wilkes on April 16th.
