ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - Eastern Softball swept Cabrini College Wednesday afternoon by scores of 5-1 and 7-4. Haleigh Willams picked up her third win of the season in game one while the Eagles offense continued to put up runs to secure both wins.
"This was a great pair of wins for us," said Head Coach
Claire Emplit. "It just felt really great to see the girls control the tempo the way they did from start to finish in both games."
In the first game of the day Eastern (6-10) used a four-run third inning to take control of the game and eventually claim the win. After a groundout,
Kelsey Clever,
Emily Harrison, and
Deanna Laughman all reached base safely to load the bases for
Erin Johnson. Johnson reached base safely on a fielding error but was able to score both Harrison and Clever to give Eastern the 2-0 lead.
Kasey Williams then reached base safely the very next at-bat off another error but scored Laughman to stretch the lead to 3-0. A sacrifice fly
Alyssa Welsh plated Johnson to make it 4-0.
Haleigh Williams took over from there allowing only one run in the top of the sixth inning. For the game, H. Williams turned in a solid performance throwing a complete game allowing six hits and one run while striking out two and forcing 13 groundouts and four flyouts.
"Haleigh was dominant for us today," continued Emplit. "She hit her spots and forced Cabrini to go after bad pitches leading to groundouts and strikeouts."
In the second game, Eastern fell behind 1-0 in the first inning but used a four-run second inning to retake the lead. H. Williams led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second two batters later off a
Taylor Crown single. After Clever had reached base safely on a fielding error to load the bases,
Maria Day earned a walk to plate the tying run.
Ashton Tomlinson then reached base safely on another Cavelier error scoring both Clever and Crown to stretch the Eagles lead to 3-1. Laughman then reached base safely on a fielder's choice but scored Day to give Eastern a 4-1 lead after two innings of play.
Cabrini rallied in the top of the third to tie the game at 4-4. The Cavaliers scored off a double, fielder's choice, and single but were unable to take advantage of the momentum and reagin the lead.
Eastern tacked on three more runs scoring one run in each of the last three innings of the game to secure the victory. Two of the Eagles final three runs came off of a fielder's choice while one came off yet another Cabrini error.
Morgan Burke came in to finish the game and pitched three scoreless innings while allowing only two hits, recording one strikeout, and five groundouts.
"Morgan has been outstanding when she has gotten her opportunities," concluded Emplit. "Her record is what it is for a reason, and her work ethic is outstanding. I see a very bright future ahead for her."
Eastern hosts Misericordia on March 24th starting at 3 pm.
