Women's Basketball Tops Rosemont; Lavin Reaches 1000

ROSEMONT, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Basketball improved to 5-1 on the season with a 78-60 non-league win at Rosemont College. Late in the second quarter, Emily Lavin became the 14th woman in program history to score 1000 career points. She finished the game with 18 points and seven rebounds.

The Eagles struggled out of the gate but used an 11-point run late in the quarter to build a seven point lead. Amanda Riiff and Taylor Price hit 3-pointers in the run. Regie Robinson made the final basket of the period to put the Eagles up 23-16. Robinson had nine points in the first quarter.

Lavin finished the first period with six points and scored the first basket of the second quarter on a feed from Robinson. She entered this evening's game with 989 points and had been averaging just over 18 points per outing. The 6'1 senior made a pair of free throws with 6:37 on the clock to put the Eagles up 11 and move her to 999 points. She is shooting a career-high 77 percent from the foul line this season.

On the next trip down the floor, Lavin kicked the ball out to Megan Bell on the perimeter for an open 3-pointer. The freshman guard took the perfect pass and put the Eagles up 14. Lavin went to the bench for a quick break, and the Eastern lead swelled to 20.

The Eagles did not score on Lavin's first possession back in the game, but Price intercepted a pass at the other end and pushed the ball in transition. Lavin caught the pass from Price deep under the basket and worked her way back toward the court and flipped a right-handed reverse lay-up toward the rim. The ball hung on the rim briefly and then fell through. Head Coach Eric Houston called a timeout and teammates met Lavin for a brief celebration on the way back to the bench.

Rosemont scored the final six points of the first half to close the Eastern lead to 46-28. For the first half, the Eagles shot 54.3 percent from the floor and made 5-of-12 3-pointers. The Ravens, meanwhile, made only 33 percent of their shots.

The Eagles stretched the lead to 26 in the third period, and the game looked safe. Rosemont cut the lead back to 14 with a strong push in the fourth period, but Eastern made 8-of-8 free throws down the stretch to finish the game. Eastern made 13-of-16 free throws in the second half.

"They made a little run at us," Head Coach Eric Houston said after the game, "but I liked the way we were able to close out the game. We made good decisions with the ball and made our free throws. It was good to see us win on a big night for Lav."

Robinson and Lavin each finished with a team-high 18 points. Price had 16 points and five assists and Riiff finished with 15 points. Shirle Brown had 22 points for the Ravens.

Eastern will host Elizabethtown College at 1 pm on Saturday.
