ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Basketball held the visiting Elizabethtown Blue Jays (6-1) to 28 percent shooting and only seven points in the fourth quarter but suffered their own offensive woes in falling, 52-49.
Regie Robinson led the Eagles with 18 points and 13 rebounds.
The Eagles (5-2) led 11-5 late in the first quarter, but the Blue Jays converted a three-point play and a pair of free throws to tie the score after one period. Eastern started to speed up the game with a 9-2 run at the start of the second quarter, but the Blue jays used deliberate possessions and offensive rebounds to slow the pace of the game again.
Eastern scored only six points over the final seven minutes of the first half and trailed 29-26 at the intermission. Elizabethtown shot only 9-of-30 in the first half, but the Blue Jays converted 11-of-13 free throws and took advantage of 12 Eastern turnovers for extra possessions. Robinson led all scorers with 12, and
Taylor Price had seven.
The game looked ready to open up at the start of the second half. Both teams traded baskets and the teams combined for 20 points over the first five minutes. Eastern grabbed a brief lead at 36-35 on a Robinson lay-up with six minutes to play, but Elizabethtown's Emma Hoesman answered with a 3-pointer late in the shot clock. That was the only 3-pointer the Blue Jays would make for the day, but it gave the visitors the lead for good.
Price made a lay-up to cut the Elizabethtown lead to 43-40 with 2:14 to play in the third period. Emily Martin made a pair of free throws with 79 seconds to play, and the score would sit at 45-40 for nearly six minutes. Martin finally broke the drought with a single free throw midway through the fourth quarter. The Eagles, however, did not score until
Amanda Riiff made her second 3-pointer of the game with three and a half minutes left. Even going nearly nine minutes without a point, the Eagles were within one possession.
The Eagles kept the deficit at three and even closed the gap to 50-49 on a pair of free throws from
Brianna Young-Harris, but a pair of turnovers late and five Elizabethtown offensive rebounds late kept the Eagles from taking the lead.
Price and
Emily Lavin joined Robinson in double-figures with 13 and 10 points. Martin led the Blue Jays with 19 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks. The Eagles will play at Kean next Saturday.
