ST. DAVIDS, Pa– Eastern University Women's Basketball led wire-to-wire in a convincing 69-53 win over the visiting Wesley College Wolverines (5-6).
Emily Lavin finished with a game-high 28 points to lead the Eagles to their fourth-consecutive win.
Lavin scored the first eight points of the game to force an early timeout from the Wolverines. The 6-1 senior made 12-of-13 shots from the floor and all four of her free throws as the Eagles looked to take advantage of mismatches inside.
"We knew they were going to try to spread us out," Head Coach
Eric Houston said of the undersized Wesley squad. "Our guards did a good job of handling pressure and getting the ball where it needed to go. Lav and Regie [Robinson] just needed to get the ball. They both did a great job on the glass, but it was huge for us to see our guards find the right passes."
The Eagles finished the game with 22 assists. This is the second consecutive game that Eastern has had more than 20 assists. Houston and his staff believe that as those numbers stay up, that the team will continue to be successful.
The lead grew to 19-6 in the first quarter on an
Amanda Riiff three-point play on a nifty pass from
Kayla Holmes. Wesley scored the final basket of the period to close the deficit to 11 points. Sixteen of the Eagles first-quarter points came in the paint.
The Eagles led by as many as twenty in the second quarter. Holmes stood out in the second period. The first-year guard moved the ball well, hit a 3-pointer, and scored on a beautiful step-through move in transition. The Eastern lead was 38-21 at halftime.
The Eagles kept the lead between 16 and 24 points for most of the second half, and Houston and his staff were able to work several players into the rotation. Lavin made all seven of her second-half field goal attempts.
While her 12-of 13 shooting effort was very impressive, it is not the most efficient effort of her career. She made all 14 shots from the floor in a 30-point outing against Wilkes in December of 2014. She is shooting a career best 63 percent from the floor and 79 percent from the foul line.
Robinson finished with 10 points, 12 rebounds, seven blocks and five assists.
"Regie is understanding how play within herself this year," Houston noted. "Last year, there were times where she would struggle a little from the floor and the rest of her game would follow. She has grown to the point where she just keeps battling and doing the things we need her to do."
Taylor Price had nine points and five assists in a game against a pair of teammates from high school. Brionna Johnson finished with 15 to pace the Wolverines.
The Eagles (9-2) carry their four-game winning streak into MAC Freedom play which starts on Wednesday at DeSales. Houston is optimistic about his team's progress, but he also knows that they will have to continue to work on rebounding and being more consistent from the perimeter. The Eagles hit only 3-of-14 from 3-point range today.
