ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Soccer (6-5, 2-0 MAC Freedom) scored three goals in a three and a half minute stretch early in the second half to beat the visiting Delaware Valley College Aggies in Homecoming action on Saturday. First-year midfielder
Zoe Galvin scored her first career goal and picked up a pair of assists in the win.
Emily Cole opened the scoring with a header in the tenth minute. The goal came after an extended period of sustained pressure. Galvin found space on the right flank and floated a long cross over a pair of marked players in the box to Cole who was alone at the back post.
With the lead, the Eagles retained possession but were unable to make a final push for a second goal. Eastern had a 12-1advantage in first-half shots but only put three on frame.
"We settled in too easily in the first half," Head Coach
Dan Mouw said of the match. "The first twelve minutes we were interesting and intelligent, and then we allowed the game to get a little slow. We were content to take overly optimistic shots instead of working the ball quickly to get great chances. We were much better the second half."
Out of the break, the Eagles put pressure on the Aggies right from the start. Cole had one shot saved and a second drift just over the upper corner.
"Emily [Cole]'s shots in the second half set an attacking tone for us, " Mouw continued. "They came out of aggressive combinations, and she was striking the ball with power."
Nicole Weenink nodded home her fourth of the year on an
Alondra Cervantes cross early in the 58th minute. Two minutes later, Galvin threaded a perfectly weighted through ball around a final defender for Cole. Cole tucked home her 14th goal of the season for a 3-0 lead.
Ninety seconds later, Galvin completed the scoring with a one-touch finish of a Weenink cross. Galvins' s twelve-yard shot went in just under the crossbar.
"We scored four very nice goals today," Mouw concluded. "Delaware Valley has been a stingy defensive team throughout this year, and we had to work to solve them. I loved that each of our goals came off good passes and team combinations."
Adrianna Rowlands and
Leah Lozzi split the shutout in goal for the Eagles.
The Eagles play at Misericordia on Wednesday night.
