Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Streak Snapped by No. 13 Rowan

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Soccer dropped a hard-fought 2-0 result to the visiting No. 13 Rowan University Profs (11-0-1). The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Eagles (6-6), and the Profs continued their unbeaten and unscored upon streak to start the year.

The visitors started the match on their front foot and put two shots on goal in the first five minutes, but the Eagles steadied themselves and earned a couple quality chances over the next five. Emily Cole put a shot on frame, and Alondra Cervantes nodded a header just wide. Perhaps the best chance of the sequence came on a play from the left flank. Nicole Weenink clipped a serve to the back post that was just out of reach of a pair of open Eastern attackers.

When the game stretched out, Rowan took advantage. An Eastern turnover at midfield led to a quick counter. Shannon Reardigan found her way toward the front of the net and forced Eastern goalkeeper Adrianna Rowlands to commit before slipping a pass to a Megan Carchidi darting in from the left side for the goal.

"That first goal was tough," said Eastern Head Coach Dan Mouw. "It is not a ball we usually turn over, but they are fast and athletic in the midfield and a little bit of inaccuracy hurts a lot. They did well with the chance."

The Eagles had a series of chances to tie the game in starting in the seventeenth minute. Courtney Davis whipped a dangerous free kick into the box, but a Rowan defender cleared it over the endline for the first of two consecutive corners. Cole put her head to each, but the Rowan defense blocked one and goalkeeper Shelby Money grabbed the other.

The Profs scored the final goal of the match in the 36th minute. Rowlands made the initial stop, but Lauren Coletti tucked the rebound home. Eastern defender Alex Imperatore made a sliding effort to clear the ball of the goal line but was unable to keep it out.

Rowan held an 11-5 edge in first half shots.

Both teams had chances in the second half. Danni Kitzinger hit a crossbar from deep in the 47th minute, and Reardigan missed the follow up shot high. Two minutes later Maxine New hit a strong shot from distance that Leah Lozzi held. The Eagles then had shots on goal by Cole and Lydia Peachey before the game shifted back toward the Profs for a five-minute stretch.

Cole took the best chance of the afternoon for the Eagles in the 64th minute. Eastern's senior standout beat a defender on the left side and hit the underside of the crossbar with a 20-yd shot. The ball bounced straight down and over Weenink's head. Emma Daly's follow-up attempt went over the bar.

"These are great games to prepare us for the league," Mouw said after the match. "We get sharper when we have to deal with this type of physicality and athleticism. As the game progressed, we saw our level rise to meet the challenge. I think our back row keeps getting better and better and we are figuring a lot of stuff out going forward. Now we need to get people healthy and ready for Saturday."

The Eagles host Delaware Valley University on Saturday at noon.
