Box Score ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Tennis opened the season with a home loss to Ursinus. Sophomore
Emma Paugh picked up Eastern's lone point of the day with a win at first singles.
"We had a lot of rookies played their first match, "Head Coach
Mark Spangler said, "so it's good for them to get a match under them. We are rusty and that is somewhat expected since we are not fully in season right now." The Eastern line-up also missed the presence of
Laura Thomas near the top of the order.
"Emma played a very smart singles match," Spangler said. "She played some good defense and hit some impressive passing shots to outlast her opponent. Paugh dropped the first set 6-4, but rallied back to take the second set 6-1, and claimed the match 10-5 in a super-tiebreaker. Even with many of the other matches ending fairly quickly, the marathon first singles match extended the total time of the match to over three hours.
Paugh and
Amanda Riiff extended their doubles match to 8-4 and
Lauren Good won five games at the fifth singles spot.
The Eagles will play at Neumann next Tuesday before wrapping up the fall at the MAC Individual Championships on Oct. 15 & 16.
