ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Eastern University Men's Soccer rebounded from a tough league loss on Saturday with a convincing 3-0 win over the visiting City College of New York Beavers in a rare Monday game on Olson Field.
Sean Dougherty and
Evan Needs each had a goal and an assist in the match.
The Eagles put pressure on the CCNY goal from the start, but Maxwell Berkow did well in the net to keep the Eagles off the board. He recorded 10 of his 11 first-half saves before the Eagles were finally able to break through on a special goal by
JD Saracco in the 39th minute.
After an extended stretch of midfield possession,
Jacob Myers found
Cade Harmon running into the box. When a CCNY defender cut off his path, Harmon pushed the ball wide to
Jereme Wells who curled a cross in toward the near post. Saracco dove through the cross and powered a header into the top part of the net. The Eagles had another chance moments later, but Berkow stopped Saracco's penalty kick, and
Jake Sankey's follow up header slipped over the bar.
The Eagles (8-2-1) had a 19-4 edge in shots at the intermission, but only led 1-0.
"We did some good things in turning possession into chances," Eastern Assistant Coach
Jeremy Payne said after the game. "We've had the advantage in possession in most of our recent games, but today we were able to figure out how to make good opportunities."
The Eagles were not, however, able to double their lead until the 64th minute. Dougherty finished the chance, but Saracco and Needs deserve much of the credit. Saracco earned the edge on the left side and sliced a cross back into the center of the penalty area. With his first touch, Needs pushed the ball toward the back post. Dougherty pounded the ball into the back of the net with his second touch.
Five minutes later, Dougherty returned the favor. The junior midfielder saw Needs running toward goal and slipped a pass right into his path. Needs pushed the ball past Berkow for the final margin.
The Eagles finished the afternoon with a 29-4 edge in shots.
"The positive take on the day, " Head Coach
Mark Wagner said, "is that we tried moving some pieces around and as the game progressed we were able to find some groupings that worked."
Quentin Keibler made two stops before giving way to
Jamie Stratton in relief. Berkow had 14 stops for CCNY (5-6-1).
The Eagles play again on Homecoming against Delaware Valley University. That game is scheduled to start at 2:30. The 2016 Hall of Honor Class, made up of 2005 men's soccer team, Paul Daffinee, and Tracy Spencer-Sullivan, will all be recognized at halftime of that game.
