ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– In the final non-league test for both teams this fall, Eastern University Women's Soccer (7-11) dropped a 3-0 decision to the visiting Ursinus College Bears (6-8-1).
The Bears opened the scoring on a transition goal in the 14th minute. Erin Farrell scored the goal after the Bears were able to escape their own end following an Eastern corner kick. The Eagles had a chance to equalize in the 17th minute on a corner kick, but
Emily Cole's header from five yards out slipped just over the crossbar.
Jeannie Jasinski doubled the lead with a shot off the inside of the left post in the 23rd minute. Farrell did the early work on the goal with a move on the right flank and a cross to the top of the box. Cole again had a chance to cut into the the Ursinus lead in the 33rd minute, but her shot caromed off the face of the crossbar, and the Ursinus lead stayed at 2-0.
The final Ursinus tally came with less than a second to play in the first half. Katie Bell found a bouncing ball at the back post and put it home just before the horn sounded.
"The third goal was very frustrating," Head Coach
Dan Mouw said after the match. "We were not in great shape going to the locker room down 2-0, but we had some things we were going to try. It was like we were waiting for the clock to run out. They played to the final second and the second half was that much more difficult."
Eastern had a 9-3 edge in shots and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks after the break, but the Bears were content to keep the Eagles to the outside, block shots, and look for counter-attacking chances.
The Eagles will close out the season with a final league match at DeSales on Saturday at noon.
