CENTER VALLEY, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Soccer rallied twice and scored 64 seconds into overtime to beat the host DeSales University Bulldogs, 3-2.
Alondra Cervantes scored in the first half and overtime.
The Eagles (8-11, 3-4 MAC Freedom) fell behind early when Angelica Bertola put away her first of two goals in the 17th minute. She finished a through-ball from Jess Wetherhold.
"We set out to limit the number of touches Wetherhold had this afternoon." Head Coach
Dan Mouw said after the game. "Alexa [Musser] was incredibly discipline. She beat her to balls, and kept her facing backward for almost the whole day. She [Wetherhold] made a great play to set up the first goal, but I was pleased with the effort we put forth to limit her effectiveness."
Cervantes tied the match in the 29th minute. She took a short pass from
Lydia Peachey near the top of the penalty arc, pushed the ball out of her feet, and curled a left-footed shot into the upper right corner.
"Lon spent all last year working on her left foot," Mouw added after the match. "She was not allowed to kick with her right after surgery, so she worked on free kicks and bending balls with her off foot. It is always good to see that kind of hard work pay off."
The lead, however, was short-lived. In the 41st minute, the Bulldogs took advantage of a turnover near midfield and played a long-ball into Bertola for her second of the day. Despite playing into a crisp breeze, the Eagles had an 8-7 advantage in first-half shots.
Emily Cole took it upon herself to continue to pressure the DeSales goal with the wind at her back in the second half. Cole took five shots in the first 35 minutes of the second half. Cole finally found the equalizer in the 81st minute. After
Katy Laurie won a header on a goalkeeper punt, Cole picked up the ball about 35 yards from goal. She took a pair of dribbles and drove a long shot under the crossbar for the 48th goal of her standout career. She leads the Eagles with 16 goals this year.
Both teams had chances as time wound down in regulation. Cole had another two shots, and Cervantes had an opportunity blocked. The Bulldogs looked to be in for a golden opportunity in the 89th minute, but
Leah Lozzi made a sliding save to send the game to overtime.
Cervantes started the action on the final goal after a foul in the middle of the field. She placed the ball quickly and rolled the ball wide.
Courtney Davis ran onto the pass and served a curling ball across the box where Cole won a contested header to a spot 15 yards from goal. Cervantes gathered the ball and cracked a right-footed shot into the lower left corner of the goal.
"We have battled through a lot this year," Mouw concluded. "To finish the year on an overtime game-winner gives our returning players a better taste as we train for the coming year and sends our three seniors off on a good note.
Emily Cole,
Hannah Bomberger, and
Lydia Peachey have been great leaders for our young team. We are grateful for who they are and what they gave. We will miss them."
