PURCHASE, N.Y.– Eastern University Field Hockey dropped a tough 3-2 decision at Manhattanville College on Saturday evening.
Gina Miller had a goal and an assist, but a pair of penalty stroke goals proved to be the difference for the host Valiants.
The Eagles went up a goal on the windy and rainy evening as Miller caught the Valiants off-guard with a quick restart in the 22nd minute. She found Marisa Laganas in front of the cage, and the first-year midfielder put the ball away for her third goal of the year.
The Valiants (10-5, 4-2 MAC Freedom) responded in the 26th minute as Robin Boot picked up a rebound for her first of three tallies on the evening. Manhattanville grabbed the lead in the 32nd minute on a Boot penalty stroke after a scrum in front of the goal. The Eagles had an 8-2 edge in penalty corners at the half but still trailed 2-1.
Boot made it 3-1 with her third goal of the night on another penalty stroke goal in the 39th minute. The Eagles pressed the action for the remainder of the match. Miller cut the deficit to a single goal in the 60th minute. The junior midfielder picked up a pass from
Hayley Williams in the middle of the circle on a penalty corner.
Eastern (5-10, 2-4 MAC Freedom) had eight penalty corners in the second half, but they were unable to find the equalizer. In addition to a 16-2 edge in corners, the Eagles had an 18-10 edge in shots.
The Eagles will play at Delaware Valley University on Wednesday before concluding their year with a home game against TCNJ next Saturday.
