ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Following a week where it had struggled to generate an effective attack, Eastern University Men's Soccer found its offensive rhythm early and held it through the game en route to a 7-0 win over the visiting Wilkes University Colonels. The Eagles (10-3-1, 3-2 MAC Freedom) scored four goals and did not allow a shot in the first half.
The offensive display started in particularly impressive fashion in the second minute of the match. After a ten-pass sequence,
JD Saracco received the ball on the right flank. The senior midfielder pushed the ball past his defender and served a ball just outside the penalty spot.
Cade Harmon beat his mark to the ball and clipped a shot to the back post for his ninth goal of the season.
The Eagles continued to possess and create, but they were not able to find the net again until the 25th minute.
Jake Sankey nodded home a Colin Furlon corner kick for his first of two goals on the afternoon. Eight minutes later,
Jacob Myers scored the third goal of the day for the Eagles. The play started with a free kick right in front of the Eastern bench.
Jake Cahill lofted a ball into the box, and Myers beat the Wilkes' goalkeeper to the ball and headed it home for his first of two goals.
Jamie Bonner scored his first goal of the year in the 38th minute. Eastern's fourth goal came on a restart from the other side. Cahill, again, served the ball into the danger zone. The Wilkes' goalkeeper parried the serve into the post, but Bonner was on the spot to head the ball in for a 4-0 lead.
Jamie Stratton came on in goal to replace
Quentin Keibler for the Eagles in the second half. He made a good save on a transition attempt in the 69th minute before giving way to Ben Lochstamphor in the 78th minute.
Myers opened the scoring in the 57th minute following an innovative effort on the right flank by Harmon. Harmon dribbled at his defender, was stopped, and then attacked again. He found the edge and played a ball to Myers on the doorstep. Myers ran the ball across the goal line.
The sixth Eastern goal came off a clever combination. Saracco played a ball into the feet of
Evan Needs who was facing away from goal. Needs touched the ball with the outside of his foot into Sankey's path. Sankey put his left-footed shot into the top corner.
Ben Hangey finished the scoring after a good pass from Bonner out of the midfield.
The Eagles will host King's in another important MAC Freedom game on Saturday.
