ST. DAVIDS, Pa.–
Cade Harmon scored his tenth goal of the year, and
Quentin Keibler and the Eastern defense kept the visitng King's College Monarchs off the board for a critical 1-0 Senior Day win. The Eagles (12-3-1, 4-2 MAC Freedom) kept their post-season hopes alive with their fourth shutout in league play this fall.
The Eagles had a nearly gale force wind at their backs in the first half. The wind was nearly too strong to be an advantage as any forward balls seemed to bleed out too far. The Eagles found the lone goal of the afternoon in the 37th minute. It came off a throw in from the left side.
Jake Cahill tossed the ball to
Jacob Myers in a little space outside the box. Myers played a ball toward Harmon in the middle of the goal, but the cross drifted too far.
Chad Mentzer ran down the cross and clipped a perfect serve back to Harmon at the edge of the six yard box. Harmon flicked it inside the far post for the 1-0 lead.
"We decided to move Jacob [Myers] forward from his center back spot," Head Coach
Mark Wagner said after the match. "We felt we needed to make something happen as the half was drawing to a close. He had only been out of the back for about a minute when we found that. It was a great play by Chad to get that ball back into the scoring area."
The Eagles had a 5-1 advantage in first-half shots but clung to a slim 1-0 lead.
The wind seemed to gain strength as the match went on. The Monarchs controlled much of the field position battle, but only put a pair of shots on frame in the second half. Wagner cited the play of Myers and
Jadon Ramsing in the middle of the back and was very pleased with the defending shape of his team.
"We got our shape right," Wagner concluded. "All over the field our guys were working with each other and we did not give them many chances even with that wind at their backs."
The win leaves the Eagles watching other results to know what their playoff scenarios are, but they do control their own destiny to get in. They wrap up MAC Freedom play at DeSales next Saturday.
Prior to the match, the program recognized its five seniors.
Jamie Bonner,
Jamie Stratton,
