ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Field Hockey used three penalty corner goals to pick up a 3-0 win over the visiting Misericordia University Cougars in a rematch of last falls MAC Freedom Semifinals.
Alison Hoag scored once and
Gina Miller buried a pair of second-half goals to put the game away.
The Eagles dominated play in the first half but were not able to find a goal until after the horn had sounded. Eastern earned the seventh corner of the half just prior to the horn, so by rule, they had an untimed play to try to score.
Hayley Williams fired the initial shot, and Hoag picked up the rebound and ripped home her second goal of the year to give the Eagles a lead at the break. Eastern had a 14-0 edge in shots and a 7-0 edge in corners.
"The team stepped up and took responsibility to generate shots," Head Coach
Camrin Azzarano said after the match. "As a group, we were much more aggressive in the circle today. "
That aggressiveness led to another five second-half penalty corners. In the 46th minute, Miller scored her second goal of the year on Eastern's second penalty corner of the second half. Macy Talhelm slipped a smart pass to Miller at the top right portion of the circle, and Miller cracked a one-time shot to the far post.
Five minutes later, Williams found Miller in front of the net for the final tally of the match. Coming into today's game, the Eastern offense had relied heavily on first-year players for scoring. Today, all three goals were scored by veteran players.
The Eagles play at Manhattanville on Saturday.
