ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- At the end of the first half of todays contest against the visitng Alvernia University Crusaders, Eastern University Field Hockey held a 16-2 advantage in shots. They trailed 1-0. The Eagles scored twice in a 100 second span in the second half and held on for a 2-1 win.
The two teams play in different MAC conferences but share a deep history dating back to the final years of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference. Entering today's match-up, the visiting team had won each of the last five games. Over those five games, Eastern held an 11-10 advantage in total score.
The Eagles (4-1) had the advantage right from the start. Eastern took seven shots and had three penalty corners before the Crusaders even entered the Eastern circle. The Alvernia defense, led by goalie Rebecca Brosious, surrendered 14 first-half penalty corners and defended them all. Brosious made 12 of her 17 saves before the intermission.
The Alvernia goal came on the Crusaders' second shot of the half. In the 22nd minute, Paige Epler served a ball into the circle from the right side and Margaret Wentel knocked it home.
The Eagles found time to regroup and unify at halftime.Â
Out of the break, the Eagles again pressed and had three quick penalty corners. Kinzler finally broke through in the 47th minute. the junior forward picked up a pass from Shannon Keliher just inside the 25. Kinzler then earned the circle with a swerving run and ripped a shot that Brosious blocked down low. The powerful shot caromed into the air and the spin on the ball sent it into the cage for the tying goal.
Almost immediately following the restart of play, the Eagle again won the ball and Kinzler and
Lauren Gay fired shots. Following a violation on Gay's shot, the Eagles earned their 19th corner of the match. On that corner, head coach
Camrin Azzarano and her staff called the simplest possible play.
Gina Miller played a smooth insert into
Megan Bolton. Bolton took a touch into the circle and blasted a shot the kicked up off an Alvernia defender's stick and into the top of the goal. Bolton, a central defender, now has 36 career goals.Â
Nicole Berger made two saves to pick up the win in goal.Â
