WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.- For the past couple weeks, Williamsport has been full of athletic drama. This evening, Eastern University Men's Soccer showed that 12 year old home run hitters don't have a monopoly on excitement.
Cade Harmon headed home a
Hunter Rosenberg serve in the 94th minute for a 1-0 overtime win at Lycoming.
From the outset, the game was a tough physical affair. Rosenberg, a Williamsport native, hit the crossbar in the 13th minute, and the Eagles did not put another shot on target until Harmon headed home the game winner 80 minutes later. The Eastern defense kept the host Warriors from having too many chances either. Sophomore goalkeeper
Quentin Keibler made his only two saves of the match in the first half. Lycoming had their best chance of the half go off the post with fourteen minutes to play.
With both teams contesting every ball, neither team put a shot on target in the second half.
"I thought
Jadon Ramsing and
John Remsberg did very well for us in the center of the back," Eastern Head Coach
Mark Wagner commented. "They [Lycoming] have a very direct style, and it was important for our center backs to play very well to deal with that." Wagner also pointed out the dynamic play of
Josh Cirocco. The senior forward, according to his head coach, changed the game with his runs from both wide and central positions.
The Eagles found the game winner on a quick throw in after a Lycoming clear. Eastern had been working for long throws on the narrow field, and may have caught the Lycoming defense a little off guard. The ball went into Rosenberg and Harmon rose up for his first collegiate goal. The game was a bit of homecoming for Rosenberg and for Harmon, who grew up just down the road in Bloomsburg.
With the win, Eastern became the first team to win at Lycoming since 2013.
"This was a big win for us," Wagner concluded. "They were picked second in the MAC Commonwealth [behind Messiah], and they are very good on their home surface. We just need to get home and rested for a tough weekend of games at F and M this weekend."
Keibler picked up the shutout win in his first action as a collegiate player.
Eastern (1-0) returns to action on Friday afternoon against Alvernia University in the first game of the Scrapyard Classic at Franklin and Marshall.
