ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- Eastern University Men's Lacrosse scored
the first 10 goals of the contest and cruised to a 15-4 home win over
the visiting Manhattanville College Valiants. Senior attack Eric Waibel
scored three times and became the third player in program history to
reach the 100 career goal plateau.
Waibel opened the scoring three
and a half minutes into the game on an assist from Tim Lamb. The Eagles
found their way to the goal six more times in the opening period to
grab control of the game. Playing against the packed in Valiant zone,
the Eastern players were very selective in their shooting and connected
on five of their first eight shots of the contest.
Matt Lee won
6-of-8 face-offs in the opening period to help the Eagles to control
possession and the game. Dave Darling, Bryan Goetz, Lamb, Grant
Ferguson, and Trevor Gallion joined Waibel in the scoring column in the
first 15 minutes. Waibel added his second of the day and 99th of his
career midway through the period.
Kyle Gillam and Jake Billera
scored in the first two minutes of the second period to give the Eagles a
9-0 lead, and the Eagles began to work even more deliberately on
offense and to integrate several younger players and the teams went to
the break with the score at 9-0. Nick DiPiano made a single save in the
first half of action and picked up the win.
The second half
provided opportunities for several younger players to play for the
Eagles. Three Eastern players collected their first career goals in the
third period. Kenny Meury, who started his career as a defender, scored
in transition for a 10-0 lead. After the Valiants got on the board, the
Eagles answered with a transition goal off the face-off from Jon Ebert.
Joe Palo won the draw and found the cutting Ebert for his first career
tally. Grant Smith scored from long-range for a 12-1 lead.
A
cross check from a Valiant defender put the Eastern man-up unit on the
field for a minute. Waibel converted from Cody Ridgway for his milestone
tally. With his 100th goal, he moves ahead of former teammate Chris
Farrar into third on the Eagles' all-time list. He trails fellow seniors
Dave Darling and Grant Ferguson on the career list.
The Valiants
scored a pair of goals to start the fourth period before Ridgway
connected on his firs tof the year and Smith pushed home his second of
the day for the final Eastern goal of the day.
The Eagles
collected assists on thirteen of fifteen Eastern goals. Jameal Hadeed
made a pair of saves in the third period and Austin Mutter made two
stops in the fourth.
The Eagles (10-3, 3-0) return to action against Delaware Valley College on Wednesday.
