HAVERFORD, Pa.--For the first time in 2015, Eastern University Softball got the chance to play a game in Pennsylvania. The Eagles, after playing 10 games in Arizona two weeks ago took the field in a doubleheader against the Haverford College Fords on Thursday, but fell 4-3 in game one and 8-0 in game two.
Eagles' junior Kasey Williams hit the Eagles' first home run of the season and the fourth of her career.
In game one, the Eagles posted five hits, including Williams' homer. Eastern started the first with back-to-back hits by Kristen Waters and Ashton Tomlinson and then used small-ball to get a run home. Williams bunted to advance both base runners and then an RBI-groundout by Emily Houck scored Waters.
Haverford responded with a run in the bottom of the first and then pounced on the Eagles for three runs in the bottom of the third. Fords' Dayle Comerford smacked a two-run home run in the inning.
Williams went yard to lead off the sixth inning, a shot over the left-field fence. The Eagles added an RBI-groundout to pull within one run.
Waters picked up her second hit of the game in the top of the seventh, but she was left stranded on the basepath and the Eagles fell 4-3.
In game two, the Eagles' struggled to generate offense. Haverford pitcher Emily Winesett struck out five, walked one and allowed just three hits en route to the win.
The Eagles left two runners in scoring position in a scoreless first inning and then really didn't threaten again until the top of the sixth. Down 2-0, the Eagles put runners on second and third with one out but couldn't bring them home.
In the bottom of the sixth, Haverford broke the game wide open with six runs. Comerford launched her second home run of the day, a three-run shot to center field to end the game with a walk-off by the eight-run rule.
Eastern's doubleheader scheduled for Saturday at FDU-Florham has been put on ice for now. No make-up day has been announced yet.
