ST. DAVIDS, Pa.—Eastern University Women's Lacrosse opened the 2015 season on Saturday morning in the middle of a chilling snow squall.
The Eagles got off to a slow start against the Haverford College Fords and ultimately fell by a final score of 17-8. Eastern, playing in its first competition under new head coach Kim Campbell, looked rusty in the first 15 minutes, but showed promise after that and began to generate offensive production.
Eastern's Anna Charlebois, a Second-Team All-Conference midfielder last season, led the Eagles with four goals. Charlebois led the Eagles' offense over the course of the 2014 season with 35 total goals.
Stephanie Hogan, Julie Haggan, Jacquelyn Janda and Steph Biancucci each scored one. For Haggan, a freshman, the goal was the first for her career.
The Fords were led by Diana Perry's game-high five goals. Molly Lausten and Sarina Manetta each had two. Perry started the scoring less than 90 seconds into the game after Dayna Kim set her up in front of the net. The Fords rolled to a 6-0 lead in the first 15 minutes while the Eagles were only able to fire off one shot on goal in that span.
Eastern broke through with 11:36 remaining in the first half, shortly after a timeout by coach Campbell. Hogan earned a free position shot and nailed the attempt. Charlebois scored a little more than two minutes later, but Haverford responded with four more goals before halftime to make it 10-2.
The Eagles chipped away with a free-position goal by Biancucci 56 seconds into the second half. After Haverford tacked on three more goals, Charlebois netted her second and third goals within a minute of each other to make it 13-5.
With the snowstorm raging on, the Eagles continued to show bursts of potential and kept fighting off the 10-goal-differential running clock with three goals in the final 13 minutes.
Eastern departs a long road trip that has them away from St. Davids for nearly a month. The Eagles play at Albright College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
