Men's Soccer Wins at Wilkes

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – Eastern Men's Soccer defeated the Wilkes University Colonels 3-1 to remain unbeaten in MAC Freedom play. Jacob Myers scored two goals to help the Eagles claim the victory.

Myers, getting his first start as a forward, put the Eagles on the board in the 2nd minute. John Remsburg tossed a long throw in into the box. A Wilkes defender won the ball, but his header went right to Andrew Ferman. A defender blocked Ferman's attempt, but Myers pushed home the rebound to give the Eagles the 1-0 lead. Myers picked up his brace in just his second career start.

In the 34th minute, Sean Dougherty had a header turned away by Tim Gallagher, the Wilkes goalkeeper. Only moments later, the Colonels tied the game on a corner kick goal. Kyle Joyce volleyed an Eastern clearing attempt into the lower left corner.

The Eagles dominated play after the Colonels scored. The Eastern attack found its reward in the 45th minute. JD Saracco netted his seventh goal of the season. Saracco started the action of the goal from near midfield. The junior standout played a ball into Cade Harmon about thirty-five yards from goal. Harmon held the ball briefly while Saracco ran past his mark and into attacking space. Saracco took a touch around a defender and slipped a shot inside the right upright for his seventh of the season.

Myers struck again in the 54th minute. The Eagles had a free kick from the right side of the box that Wilkes did well to defend. Harmon ran down the Colonels clear and pushed it back to Chad Mentzer sixty yards from goal. Mentzer, aware that the Wilkes back row was stepping forward payed a ball over the top to his classmate. The Wilkes goalkeeper challenged for the ball, but Myers pushed it past him and buried the ball in the empty net.

That was all the Eagles would need. Wilkes managed just one shot in the second half.

Eastern had a 27-6 advantage in shots for the match.

The No. 8 Eagles will play at King's College in a rematch of last fall's Freedom Conference Championship match on Saturday evening.
