Field Hockey Cut Down By OT Stroke

HAVERFORD, Pa.—Eastern Field Hockey took a 2-1 lead with four minutes remaining in Wednesday night's game at Haverford College, but the Haverford Fords scored with 1:15 remaining to force overtime where they eventually won on a penalty stroke 3-2.

The Eagles fell behind in the 13th minute when Haverford's Jen DiMaria worked her way into the circle and slipped a shot past Eastern keeper Jennifer O'Neill.

Seven minutes later, Eagles' senior Alexa Borrelli spun around her defender in front of the cage and rolled in her first goal of the season to even the game at 1-1.

The Eagles and Fords battled for the next 45 minutes with neither team finding the back of the cage. The Eagles passed the ball well and generated scoring opportunities on fast breaks and corners. Eastern forward Danielle Frasca put five shots on goal alone but was robbed each time by Haverford keeper Lindsey Lopes. Eastern earned seven second-half corners, putting them in good position to score, but didn't finish a corner until the end of the 66th minute when Megan Bolton fired her signature blast from the edge of the circle.

Bolton, who was last year's Freedom Conference Defensive Player of the Year and who already had two defensive saves in the game, however, exited the game with an injury with about two minutes left in the game. With Bolton out, the Fords attacked from the left wing and DiMaria carried the ball into the circle where she netted her second goal of the game to even the score at 2-2.

In the second minute of overtime, the Fords earned a penalty stroke when the officials deemed that Eagles' keeper O'Neill had played the fast-breaking player and not the ball. Elena Veale hit an off-speed shot low and stick side to complete the comeback for the Fords.

Last season's meeting between the two teams ended with Bolton hitting the game-winning penalty stroke in overtime.

Eastern (0-2) looks to secure its first win on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the season's home opener against Richard Stockton College.
