Field Hockey Takes Down Stockton

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.—Eastern University Field Hockey claimed its first victory of the season, clipping the Richard Stockton College Ospreys 3-1 on a scorching September morning.

Eagles senior midfielder Hannah Bartholomew scored twice in the first half and junior forward Danielle Frasca directed in an insurance goal in the second half.

Just before the game reached the one minute mark, Eastern drew a Stockton foul near the circle and Hannah Bartholomew buried a shot from the left side of the circle. Bartholomew then tallied her second goal of the game in the seventh minute, pressing towards the cage, gathering a deflected pass and slipping a shot past Stockton goalie Liz Stankiewicz. Stankiewicz recorded 10 saves in the loss. On the opposite end of the field, Eastern goalie Jennifer O'Neill denied eight shots on goal. The Ospreys punched their only goal past O'Neill in the 34th minute, right before halftime, when Samantha Barcia gathered her own rebound on a breakaway and finished the opportunity.

The Ospreys earned 13 corners throughout the game while Eastern earned eight. Midway through the first half, the Ospreys earned four consecutive corners but Eastern's defense denied them each time.

With 11 minutes remaining, Eastern picked up an important insurance goal. After a corner, Stankiewicz came off the line to block a shot by Megan Bolton, and Danielle Frasca slipped in behind her. Eastern's Jess Kinzler gathered the rebound and made a nice backhand pass to an open Frasca.

Eastern looks to stay on the winning track on Wednesday when Widener University comes to St. Davids for a 4 p.m. contest.
