Women's Soccer Tops Widener

CHESTER, Pa.—Eastern University Women's Soccer scored two goals in each half to emerge with a 4-1 win at Widener University. Amber Stirling scored a pair of goals, Emily Cole added a goal and two assists and Alondra Cervantes scored a goal as well.

The Eagles had more of the action early, but neither team was able to find any space behind the opponents' backline for the first half hour of the period. In the 34th minute, Widener attempted a corner kick, serving a dangerous ball into the box, but Eagles' freshman defender Caroline Lozzi blocked the shot and sent the ball out towards midfield. Eastern took advantage of Widener's aggressive positioning on the corner. Cole received the ball just shy of midfield and feathered a pass into the attacking zone for Stirling. The freshman forward out raced her mark to the ball and slotted a shot into the lower corner for her second goal of the season.

Four minutes later, the Eagles created another chance. Freshman Kelsey Hoffman won possession deep in Widener's territory and knocked the ball to fellow freshman Alondra Cervantes. Cervantes located Stirling on the left side who finished the one-timer into the lower right corner.

Up 2-0 after Stirling's pair of goals, the Eagles almost added another goal in the 40th minute, but Lozzi's free kick at the top of the box caromed off the crossbar and out of play. The Eagles out-shot the Pride 7-4 in the first half.

Five minutes into the second half, the Eagles went up 3-0 on a play that started with a pass by Emily Roquemore. Roquemore turned upfield about 35 yards from goal and slotted a pass for Cole. Cole beat her defender inside and ripped a shot off the inside of the far post and back onto the field. Cervantes tracked the rebound down and netted her third goal of the season.

Eagles' head coach Dan Mouw commented that even though Roquemore does not get an assist for that play, her crisp pass created that insurance goal.

The Widener Pride responded in the 51st minute with their first goal as Eva Reyes struck a ball from 20 yards out, off the underside of the crossbar and over the line. Eastern goalie Jules Leco faced 10 Widener shots, four on goal and recorded three saves.

Emily Cole added her fifth goal of the year in the 83rd minute on a pass from Cervantes.

With the win, the Eagles stopped a five-game skid.

"This was a big win for us,” Mouw said. “We had a tough run of games against some very good opposition and we needed to find our confidence. We are a young team, and I feel like we're getting better each day.”

The Eagles continue their road swing on Tuesday when they play at Stevens Tech.
