ST. DAVIDS, Pa.—No. 14 Eastern University Volleyball trounced the King's College Monarchs 25-13, 25-15, 25-11 in the Eagles' home opener on Tuesday night.
The Eagles began the 2014 season with 17 road games, winning 13 of those contests. Eastern's last three games had been losses to nationally-ranked teams in a tough tournament in Illinois, and the losses dipped Eastern to No. 14 nationally from the No. 11 spot. Eastern snapped that losing streak with this quick three-set victory over Freedom Conference opponent King's College.
Eastern senior middle hitter Katrina Pisch who hit .526 last week across five matches kept up the pace by hitting .556 against King's. Her 12 kills were a game-high. The Eagles only play seven home regular season matches this year, and Pisch commented that each one is especially exciting for her as a senior. She said that she was in the gym hours before tonight's game ready to get the game going in front of the home crowd.
Freshman Morgan Shemonski got her first experience playing in front of the crowd at St. Davids and gave a good show, spiking nine kills on 13 attempts with no errors for a .692 attack percentage. Senior Lauren Sproles added nine kills, and sophomore Stephanie Elechko added six kills and three solo blocks.
Setter Rikki Schlager and libero Rylie Haas were right around their season averages in their main statistical categories. Schlager recorded 31 assists (averages 10.5/ set) and Haas notched 16 digs (averages 5.3 digs/set). Haas also recorded three aces.
The Eagles hit .306 for the match and held the Monarchs below zero, -.011.
On Friday and Saturday, the Eagles will host a quad match and will face Salisbury, Widener and Haverford.
