READING, Pa.--Eastern University Field Hockey scored three goals off of eight penalty corners en route to a 4-3 win over the Alvernia University Crusaders Wednesday night.
Despite allowing 12 corners, the Eagles kept the Crusaders at bay, rebuffing them on each corner attempt. Eastern's Alexa Borrelli, Megan Bolton and Lauren Gay each scored after a corner. Danielle Frasca scored added the Eagles' open field goal.
Alvernia scored the game's first goal in the 22nd minute on a breakaway by Margaret Wentzel. The Eagles responded in the 25th minute with Borrelli finishing a blocked rip by Bolton.
Bolton found the back of the cage in the 34th minute with a blast following the insert by Gina Miller.
Four minutes into the second half, the Eagles stretched the lead to 3-1 with Frasca's tally. Frasca collected a rebounded shot by Shannon Kellier off the post and finished it for her third goal this season.
Alvernia's Wentzel put home her second breakaway goal of the game in the 43rd minute, but Eastern's Lauren Gay gave the Eagles some breathing room in the 52nd minute with her first goal of the year. Gay gathered a shot by Bolton off the corner saved by Alvernia's goalie Erin Wunsch and slipped the second attempt past Wunsch to make it 4-2.
The goal proved to be important as the Crusaders recorded a late penalty stroke goal in the 70th minute.
Eastern goalie Jennifer O'Neill recorded five saves in the win.
The Eagles (3-3) travel to Rowan on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game.
