ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- Eastern University Women's Lacrosse scored
six of the final seven goals in the game and pulled away to a 14-7 win
over the visiting Elizabethtown College Blue Jays. Anna Charlebois and
Shannon Wilcox each scored five times to pace the Eagles.
The Blue
Jays (1-12) led 4-2 at the midway point of the first half. The Eastern
defense, led by seven caused turnovers from Ariana Borreggine, stiffened
its resolve and limited the E-town chances, and Megan McReynolds made
four of her eight stops in the final 15 minutes of the period.
Wilcox
and Charlebois each scored their second of the day two and a half
minutes apart to tie the score, and then Jaquelyn Janda scored her third
of the year to give the Eagles a 5-4 lead.
That lead, however,
would be short-lived. Forty seconds later, Addie Stang scored her second
of the day to lift the Jays back into a 5-5 tie with eight and a half
minutes to play in the half. Wilcox then took over the game with three
goals in a four-minute stretch to give the Eagles a four-goal edge.
Caleigh Falco set up the third of those, the fifth of the afternoon for
Wilcox, with a crisp feed from behind the cage.
The Jays grabbed a
goal back before Borreggine finished a pass from Angalena Malavenda in
the final minute before intermission for a 9-6 lead. The goal gave the
Eagles momentum that they would not relinquish going into the break.
The
two teams traded goals in the first minute of the second half, but
Elizabethtown was not able to solve the Eastern defense over the final
29 minutes of the contest. Charlebois scored three second-half goals, and
Stephanie Hogan also scored her second of the afternoon.
While
the Blue jays enjoyed a slight 12-11 edge in draw controls, the Eagles
got 10 saves from their goalies and forced 26 turnovers. The Eagles
limited the Blue Jays to 67 percent in the clearing game.
Borreggine led both sides with seven ground balls.
Eastern
returns to action on Thursday with a home date against Rowan. The
Eagles travel to Wilkes for a pre-playoff elimination game on Saturday.
The winner of that contest will advance to the Freedom Conference
tournament.
